Staying Calm During Stressful Times

2020 has been a year of stress, uncertainty, loss, and turmoil. For many, it might be one of the most difficult years of their lives. For others, it may be one of many difficult years. However, you have handled this year, managing stress and staying calm is essential to your overall health and wellbeing. Today we have some of our favorite tips for staying calm during these stressful times:

1. Focus on your breathing.

Our breathing helps us manage our emotions and can encourage a calming experience throughout our body. One way to get yourself into a calm frame of mind is taking a deep breath and count to five, hold it for a moment, and then breathe out slowly. By taking regular deep breaths, you lower your heart rate and blood pressure, which helps you

maintain a sense of calm.

2. Take care of how you are talking to yourself.

What you say to yourself can influence how you perceive a situation and your ability to manage it. Your inner dialogue can either calm you down or stress you out. So, pay attention to blessings in your life right now. Take care with which words you use to describe a situation. Paying attention to your thoughts and what you say about your current circumstances can help you stay calm and reduce stress.

3. Get plenty of sleep and regular exercise.

Getting enough sleep is important when maintaining a calm frame of mind. By having enough energy for the next day, you are more likely to respond to a situation in a relaxed, patient manner. Exercise is also important during stressful times too; however, don't overexert yourself. Add in a regular yoga routine or go for a walk around your neighborhood. You will find that your mind will remain focused and calm.

4. Eat healthy.

While it may seem obvious, make sure you are eating right. It's tempting to use food comfort yourself, but that can do more harm than good. Eat a diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. Limit how much sugar intake, avoid too much alcohol and caffeine, and drink plenty of water. Eating right can help you manage your stress effectively.

5. Seek help when you need it.

When you are overwhelmed by stress, you may be tempted to keep it to yourself. Working through a situation on your own without the help and support of others can lead to roadblocks and added struggles. Stay in touch with a friend or a family member or seek others in a support group to go to with how you are feeling right now.

2020 will be a year that goes down in history books, and it's understandable for you to feel overwhelmed and stressed out.
